About the journey from Langkawi to Koh Lipe

Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah, is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea. While most travelers visit the island for its palm-fringed beaches, there is plenty to do on the ground, up in the air and underwater. Suit up and go diving or snorkeling at the Pulau Payar National Park, famous for its colorful coral reefs. Hop on a cable car ride that takes you above the clouds to the Langkawi Sky Bridge, giving you a bird’s eye view of the Gunung Mat Cincang, Telaga Tujuh waterfalls, and the islets surrounding Langkawi.

Other must-do activities include kayaking through the mangroves, trekking to the island’s waterfalls and hiking up Gunung Raya mountain. If all this seems a bit much, the island offers pristine strips of sand to relax and clear waters to dip your feet into!

Koh Lipe’s magnetic appeal lies in its relaxed vibe as much as it does in its turquoise blue waters. Start the day at Sunrise Beach, watching the sun break out from the horizon to cast its golden glow on the skies above and water below. Spend the day diving and discovering the region’s colorful underwater world at 8 Mile Rock, Yong Hua Shipwreck, or Sting Ray City. With coral reefs located just a few meters from shore, even beginners will find plenty of snorkeling opportunities.

End the day at Sunset Beach watching the sun go down from one of the many tiny bars nearby, drink in hand. Sleep. Wake up. Repeat. Of course, if you want to add some variety to the day, you could always hike to Koh Lipe Viewpoint on neighbouring Koh Adang, return to a relaxing massage at Pattaya Beach, and end the evening sampling the freshest seafood on Walking Street.

Though located in neighboring countries, the distance from Langkawi to Koh Lipe is less than 40 miles (60 km) and takes one a half hours to two hours to cover by ferry. The ferries leave from two different piers in Langkawi and drop off passengers at multiple piers and resorts in Koh Lipe.

Since the journey takes travelers from Malaysia to Thailand, passengers are advised to keep their travel documents and passports ready. Passengers are required to hand over their passport for processing at Langkawi which are then returned after immigration clearance at Koh Lipe.
